  4. Jumps between       Systems containing many files or nodes, with each
  5. information units   containing jumps to other files are often called
  6. =================   hypertext <link29>.  But, ARE these programs hypertext?

  14.                     To extend word searches into hypertext, one might:

  16.                       (1)  Sort a book index by page numbers
  17.                       (2)  Make separate files at breaks in the page numbering
  18.                       (3)  Add index cross-references to each of the files.

  20. Active              While putting pieces of the index into each file is
  21. Cross-references    an improvement over a single-location index, this
  22. ================    system does not organize the information into a unified

  25. Linguistic          Nevertheless, HyperRez does contain linguistic methods
  26. Hyper-text          (i.e., word oriented)  of jumping to key words in
  27. ==========          other files.  These methods are:

  29. Hypertext jump

  31.                                             in the defined file.

  33. Text search         In constructing knowledge systems, I've created several text
  34. ===========         searching programs that automatically build hypertext links.

  36.                     MATCH -- searches all files for user-entered text matches
  37.                     MP    -- searches all files for defined phrase matches
  38.                     RMP   -- searches all files for key word clusters
  39.  
  40.                     While all this sounds grand, I think that good hypertext
  41.                     anticipates and solves all desired access to information
  42.                     without the user ever thinking of a need to search text.
